Year 6

In Year 6 children are expected to have a more conscientious approach to their work and to organise themselves to a much higher standard in preparation for the demands of the Senior School.

Art and Design

As the pupils move through Key Stage Two they will begin to take on more complex tasks that will expand their skills, introduce them to new materials and encourage them to express their ideas in 2-d and 3-d forms.

Drawing is seen as an important foundation for any artwork and all pupils will be encouraged to use a sketchbook to record their observations, explore their imaginative ideas and investigate the design process. The pupils will continue to learn about colour, pattern, texture, shape, form and space and they will begin to use vocabulary that will help them to discuss theirs and others work.

Painting, drawing, printmaking, collage and model-making projects are included in the Year 6 curriculum. All artwork will be supported by group discussion and the pupils will look at the work of relevant artists and designers in order to inform their own artwork.

Lunch time clubs are available to all those who wish to further their interest in the subject, whilst those able and talented pupils will be invited to join an Art Scholarship class taught by a specialist member of staff.

English

Pupils build on the work they have covered in Year 5. They study more complex texts and poetry, which require more advanced analysis.

Writing lessons explore a range of styles and genres, including portal stories, poetry, non-chronological reports and biographies.

A variety of novels are read, and pupils are encouraged to read books of their own choice and be prepared to discuss them.

Dictionaries and thesauruses are constantly in use as an aid to spelling and to increase vocabulary.

Towards the end of Lent term, we begin to study and prepare to perform our very own version of a Shakespearian play. This includes live music and is performed in our newly refurbished school hall.

French

Pupils move on to the next stage of La Jolie Ronde and also learn from the Salut scheme. Accèss Studio, which is aimed at Year 7, is now introduced as our pupils have been learning French for six years. Over the Advent term, there is a consolidation and revision of basic vocabulary and grammatical structures studied in Year 5. The children learn how to talk about their families, their classroom, their house (rooms and furniture), their clothes and the shops in their town or village. They learn numbers up to 100. They revise the verbs ‘to be’, ‘to have’ and learn ‘er’ verbs in the present tense. They have vocabulary to learn on a regular basis. The aim of the year is to consolidate sound skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing and to achieve a competent level of spoken French. Such skills enable the pupils to use French as a tool for communication in a variety of ways. Our pupils are very well prepared for their move to KS3 French.

Geography

In Advent term children will be looking at Leicester and its surroundings. They will also be developing their map skills and map interpretation. In the second term they will be studying settlements, including urban and rural development. The children will also complete a short field work project.

In the final term tectonic processes (earthquakes and volcanoes) will be studied. They will look at the causes and effects of these natural hazards, including a case study.

History

During Year 6 the children study history through the ages from ancient to modern times. We work through many of the major peoples, civilisations and events in both Britain and the World. We develop pupils’ awareness of when things happened and to gain an understanding of chronology and timescale.

Information Computer Technology (ICT)

Children continue to build on their knowledge of word processing, graphics, spreadsheets and databases which they will have begun in previous years.

Maths

The Maths Department in Year 6 builds up the children’s confidence and strengthens their skills in numbers, shapes, space and measures and handling data.

We continue to follow the White Rose Maths scheme.

Religious Studies

In Year 6 we take a slightly different approach to Religious Studies and make a study of the five main faiths in the world today.

We look at the festivals, customs and practices of Hinduism, Islam, Sikhism, Judaism and Buddhism.

Science

In Year 6 pupils study such topics as The Plant Life Cycle; Human Life Cycle and Reproduction; Classification of Animals and Plants; Electricity and Magnetism; Forces and Motion.

The pupils are encouraged to develop their scientific language and practical skills. They use conventional diagrams, charts and graphs.
