Modern Foreign Languages

From Reception to Year 6

At LGS Stoneygate, we believe that learning a language opens the door to new cultures, experiences and opportunities. Our Modern Languages curriculum is designed to nurture confident communicators and curious learners, helping children develop an early enthusiasm for languages and a growing awareness of the wider world.

Through engaging, interactive lessons, pupils build strong speaking, listening, reading and writing skills in French and Spanish from an early age, laying firm foundations for future language learning.

Early Years & Key Stage 1

Reception to Year 2

From Reception through to Year 2, children enjoy 30 minutes of French or Spanish each week. Lessons are lively, practical and fun, using songs, games, stories, role‑play and hands‑on activities to introduce new vocabulary and simple conversational language.

Pupils learn greetings, numbers, colours and everyday phrases in a supportive environment that builds confidence and encourages a positive attitude towards learning another language. The focus at this stage is on enjoyment, participation and developing strong listening and speaking skills.

Key Stage 2

Year 3 to Year 6

From Year 3 onwards, pupils continue with 30 minutes of French or Spanish each week, alongside an additional 30 minutes of WoLLoW (World of Languages, Languages of the World).

WoLLoW is an exciting and interactive programme that helps children understand how languages work, exploring grammar, linguistics and the history of language. Pupils are also introduced to a wide range of world languages and cultures, encouraging inclusivity, curiosity and a deeper appreciation of global diversity.

As pupils progress through Key Stage 2, they further develop their conversational speaking, reading and writing skills, while gaining a stronger understanding of grammar and vocabulary. Cultural learning is woven throughout the curriculum, helping children become open‑minded, confident and globally aware learners.

Why Learn Languages?

Learning a language supports children’s development in many ways. It builds confidence and communication skills, strengthens memory and problem‑solving abilities, and encourages cultural understanding and respect for others.

At LGS Stoneygate, we aim to inspire a lifelong love of languages, equipping our pupils with the skills, curiosity and confidence they need to thrive as respectful and informed global citizens.
