Sport
Sport plays a major role in school life at LGS Stoneygate, helping every pupil develop physical confidence, teamwork, sportsmanship and the courage to “have a go.” We believe in sport for all, and our programme is designed to include, challenge and inspire pupils of every ability.
Team spirit and healthy competition
Every child belongs to one of our four Leagues, and all pupils are encouraged to take part in Intra‑League competitions, building team spirit, resilience and pride in representing their group.
Alongside this, every pupil—regardless of experience or ability—will have the chance to represent the school in a friendly fixture against another school. This inclusive approach ensures that sport at LGS Stoneygate is both aspirational and accessible, giving every child the opportunity to shine, grow in confidence and enjoy being part of a team.

Physical Education and Games
At LGS Stoneygate, we believe PE and Games should be enjoyable, inspiring and confidence‑building. When activities are fun, pupils feel motivated, make progress and experience success—boosting self‑worth and fostering a positive lifelong attitude to physical activity.
We champion a simple formula that underpins our approach:
Effort + Motivation + Persistence = SUCCESS
Our Aims
A lifelong love of sport
We want every child to leave LGS Stoneygate with a genuine enjoyment of sport and physical activity—something that will benefit their health, wellbeing and confidence long into adulthood.
Strong sporting values
Through sport, pupils develop qualities that matter both on and off the field:
- Self‑discipline
- Physical and mental resilience
- Determination and pride
- The ability to win well and lose gracefully
- Respect for opponents, teammates and officials
Teamwork and community
We actively encourage team sports because they teach children how to work collaboratively, support one another and value the success of the group. These lessons in teamwork are just as important in life as they are in sport.
Inclusive coaching and opportunities
Every pupil receives high‑quality coaching, training and match experience designed to help them grow and develop their skills. All children have the chance to represent the school at an appropriate level and are made to feel equally valued, whatever their starting point or ability.
Elite Athletes
Supporting Sporting Excellence at LGS Stoneygate
At LGS Stoneygate, we are proud to have pupils who excel in a wide range of sports—from Rugby and Hockey to Swimming and beyond. Their achievements are the result of dedication, hard work and a genuine passion for their sport, and many go on to represent not only the school, but also their county and even national teams.
We recognise that high‑performing young athletes have unique needs. As a school, we provide the support and flexibility required to help them balance their sporting commitments with their academic responsibilities. This includes:
- Understanding and adaptable homework expectations
- Supportive communication between staff, coaches and families
- Practical routines, such as ensuring pupils can eat at appropriate times around training
- Pastoral encouragement to help them manage the pressures of performance and competition
Our aim is to ensure that every talented athlete feels fully supported—so they can continue to thrive both in their sport and in their learning.
Sports Taught
We pride ourselves on the array of sporting opportunities our pupils are given. The major games at LGS Stoneygate include Rugby, Football, Hockey and Cricket for boys, and Hockey, Netball, Rounders and Cricket for girls.
From Year 2 to Year 8 all pupils will have two half term blocks of swimming/water polo at the Leicester Grammar School indoor swimming pool. We compete in swimming galas against other South Leicestershire schools.
In PE lessons throughout the academic year, children will also complete a half term of the following activities:
- Pre-prep (Reception - Year 2): Dance, Gymnastics, Athletics and Games
- Prep (Year 3 - 6): Dance, Gymnastics, Athletics, Cross Country and Tennis.
- Senior School (Year 7 - 11): Athletics, Cross Country, Basketball, Mixed Football, Tennis and Volleyball.

Year 9 upwards
Our Year 9 pupils begin preparing for their IGCSEs and this includes PE and Games. Some of our pupils choose to take IGCSE PE in Year 10 and 11. In preparation for this, our older pupils take part in Games at Leicester Grammar School.
Sports Day
Every pupil takes part in our annual Sports Day. Pupils represent their League and are grouped:
- Pre-prep Sports - Mid-morning and Lunch
- Prep Sports - Afternoon and Tea
- Senior School Sports - Afternoon and Tea
This gives the parents an opportunity to come and see their children taking part in exciting, fun events, with an element of competition.

Extra Events
The PE Department also organise extra events for the pupils. These events include a Christmas pre-prep production with an element of dance, pre-prep gymnastic display, Morris Mile Obstacle Course, an invitational netball & football tournament, special guests to inspire the pupils and many other exciting events. We are always looking for new initiatives and opportunities to inspire our pupils.
