Stoneygate pathways to success
Year 9 signals the beginning of key stage 4 and is a broad and balanced foundation year for courses to be followed up to age 16. Subjects studied are: English, Science, Maths, French or Spanish, Geography, Religious Studies, History, Music, Art (including Textiles), PSHE, Games, PE and IT. Some pupils will benefit from extra English and Maths and this can be facilitated.
In Years 10 and 11 pupils will study for five core GCSEs (English, English Literature, Mathematics, Double Award Science) and will then make four option choices from a mixture of GCSEs and more vocational courses, with greater emphasis on continual assessment/ coursework and reduced intensity of terminal examinations.
We are very excited by this new 14-16 curriculum. It will build on the strengths of many of our pupils in a spacious environment where we are very well placed to offer the chosen courses. It is important to understand that these courses all provide for progression to the next stage of education and indeed to university.
Key to this distinctive offering is our desire for children to thrive on an education which is best suited to their talents and aspirations. Integral to our focus on the individual we encourage our pupils to strive for excellence. It is the positive culture of the school which will then breed every child’s success and happiness. Further detail can be found in our Options Booklet below.
Post 16 education
All these courses are either GCSEs or highly respected Level 2 GCSE-equivalents, already well-embedded in a number of other independent schools. They will all enable pupils to pursue a variety of options at 16+: A levels, BTEC Level 3 qualifications or apprenticeships. Some may proceed to a further education or Sixth Form college for the next phase of their education or training, prior to university; some might wish to transfer to Leicester Grammar School for their A level programme.
This new, flexible offering with its range of traditional and vocational options, will prepare our pupils to be naturally self-confident, adaptable professionals and entrepreneurs in an ever-changing world.
