Year 2

Year 2: growing confidence, independence and curiosity
In Year 2, children continue to build on the strong foundations laid in Reception and Year 1. This year deepens their skills, broadens their knowledge, and gently prepares them for the increasing independence expected from Year 3 onwards.
A year of growing independence
Year 2 pupils begin to take greater responsibility for organising themselves, approaching tasks with more confidence, and applying what they know in new and increasingly independent ways. Learning remains practical, engaging and purposeful, helping children enjoy every step of their progress.
French in Year 2
French continues to be a lively and well‑loved part of the Year 2 curriculum. Children develop their skills through the interactive Salut! scheme, supported by additional high‑quality resources produced in school. Lessons are active, fun and immersive, with pupils taking part in:
- Games and interactive activities
- Songs, rhymes and role‑play
- Listening to, translating and responding to stories in French
The emphasis is on using French for real communication, helping pupils understand that the language has purpose and meaning beyond the classroom.
Across the year, children develop the four key skills:
- Listening
- Speaking
- Reading
- Writing
They are introduced to simple grammar in an age‑appropriate, engaging way, and explore topics such as:
- Dates
- Numbers
- Countries
- Likes and dislikes
By the end of Year 2, the aim is for children to feel increasingly confident using French to access games, activities and simple classroom interactions — building a strong, enjoyable foundation for future language learning.
